Mainstream Media Crossroads for MMA

Monday, November 26, 2007 by Brett "The Conqueror" Beverly

It’s officially a critical point in the development of MMA in mainstream media. After the initial buzz of ESPN’s agreement with the UFC, the coverage from these organizations has been lackluster at best.

While it’s true that ESPN, Fox Sports and Yahoo are covering MMA, these sources are still a long way from rivaling Sherdog or MMAweekly in coverage.

Take ESPN for example, MMA results are as easy to find on their website as chess highlights. The MMA section is literally under the “more” category, right below horse racing.

Can A No Title Fight PPV Be A Good Thing

Friday, November 16, 2007 by Brett "The Conqueror" Beverly

Starting with UFC 70 in Manchester, U.K., the UFC has headlined four PPV cards with non-title match-ups. As the fourth of those PPVs, UFC 78, is just a few days away, quite a few MMA fans are outraged at the prospect of another title-less PPV card.

Claims of boycotts and wishes for the “good old days” fill online forums across the Internet. While many fans falsely claim they are “done” with the UFC, it’s clear they don’t see the entire picture.

Two wins and Thirteen Loss: Looking at Steroids and Illegal Substances

Wednesday, November 07, 2007 by Brett "The Conqueror" Beverly

We might as well refer to 2007 as the year Mixed Martial Arts officially became mainstream. From ESPN coverage to the unification of the Pride and UFC light heavyweight titles, 2007 proved that MMA is not a fade, but a legitimate sport with a rabid following.

This newfound attention has made fighters famous and every MMA event a critical testing ground for young and veteran fighters alike. But in order for all of this success to happen, groundwork was laid in an effort to legitimize the sport; one of those efforts was a substance abuse policy.

With a new regulation come first-time offenders. Seventeen fighters have tested positive for a banned substance in 2007. Of those 17 fighters, fourteen tested positive for some type of steroid.

With so many fighters getting busted, the success rate must be Barry Bonds-like. Not quite.

Inability to Adapt: Rich Franklin

Wednesday, October 31, 2007 by Brett "The Conqueror" Beverly

I have to admit something and I don’t care who knows it: my heart broke when I saw Rich Franklin drop to the floor after a well timed Anderson Silva hook at UFC 77.

While I’ve always been a fan of MMA, I became the obsessed, slightly eccentric, weirdo that I am today while Rich Franklin was the middleweight champion. Call is nostalgia, call it caving into the UFC marketing, but I’ve always been a fan of “Ace.”

Middleweight Madness: Who can challenge Anderson Silva?

by Brett "The Conqueror" Beverly

I’ve seen Slim Jim packages that put up a better fight than Rich Franklin did. No hometown crowd, no fight team, and no amount training were going to help “Ace” regain his belt.

I say this, not a knock towards Rich Franklin, but as a nod to UFC’s longest (current) reigning champion, Anderson “The Spider” Silva. In a little over 16 months, the Brazilian has dominated the middleweight division with highlight knockouts that make MMA fans jump up from their couch in awe.

Silva’s domination over the former champ leaves the division in a hard place. At 185lbs, who can challenge Silva?
